Hosta 'Her Eyes Were Blue'
[M] There was not a dry eye in the room at the 2009 AHS Convention in Lansing, Michigan as Mary Schwartzbauer told of her hosta journey in her Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award acceptance speech. The pinnacle of Mary's long-time passion for hostas was selecting and naming one of Don Dean's hybrids in memory of her dear mother. One of Don's distinguished blues, this cross of 'Frosted Dimples' x 'Sea Frolic' holds its silvery color well into the season. The broad leaves cup gently, are nicely ruffled along the margin, and end in a sharp, twisted point. Hosta 'Her Eyes Were Blue' has excellent substance and develops moderate puckering as it matures into a 12" tall by 30" wide mound. Fertile, near white flowers open in mid to late summer.
