[M] It has long been questioned whether the pin striped 'Mito-no-hana' is worth using in hybridizing, and this seedling from Hugo Philips proves that it can give interesting results. 'Mean Gene' emerges with pointed, creamy-white leaves in the spring. As the season progresses, the ghostly foliage develops minute green flecks, until the plant is more green than white by late summer. Hosta 'Mean Gene' will be of great interest to those collectors captivate by "white" hostas. I assume the white flowers that bloom in mid summer are fertile, which could make this an interesting plant for hybridizers.
